Hematologic Cancers
What are the different types of leukemia?
The Leukemia subtype CLL is often asymptomatic and progresses slowly. Treatment for most leukemia subtypes includes a remission induction and post-induction maintenance therapy. The Ann Arbor Staging System is used for Hodgkin lymphoma; one of its components is classifying “a” (asymptomatic) and “B” (symptomatic) as well as histologically classifying the hematologic cancer. Hodgkin lymphoma has a strongly suspected association with exposure to specific viruses. A patient who is in their late sixties and has hypercalcemia and bone pain is most likely to be diagnosed with multiple myeloma, another type of hematologic cancer.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes airway hyperresponsiveness, mucus production, and mucosal edema resulting in reversible airflow obstruction. Allergens, air pollutants, cold weather, physical exertion, strong odors, and medications are common predisposing factors for asthma. When an individual is exposed to a trigger, an immediate inflammatory response with bronchospasm happens. This inflammatory process leads to recurrent episodes of asthmatic symptoms such as cough, dyspnea, wheezing, and increased mucus production.
